ANIMALS IN WAR MEMORIAL
July 17, 2009
A memorial to all animals who have served alongside Australian troops in times of war, was unveiled in the Australian War Memorial sculpture garden, Canberra, in May 2009.
The memorial is a joint project between the Australian War Memorial and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).
Designed by Steven Holland, the powerful and evocative centrepiece is a bronze horse's head from Web Gilbert's Desert Mounted Corps monument, which was badly damaged during the Suez Crisis of 1956.
The head sits on a granite column resting on a base that reflects the shape of an eye ... and of a teardrop. For a photograph, see also the 'Animal Heroes' main page on this website.
The Animals in War memorial was unveiled during the 'A is for Animals' exhibition, which is to tour Australia, and features many of the stories which appear in Anthony Hill's 'Animal Heroes'.
